Are car accidents really more likely to occur closer to home?

It has been revealed that many drivers feel
safer once they are driving in their familiar neighbourhood and tend to relax
and not take as much care as they would when driving in an area they are
unfamiliar with. This area tends to extend as far as ten miles from the drivers
home, with the worst areas for accidents being within five miles of home.

What this means for motorists is that they
should not drop their guard when driving in their comfort zone. Remember that
other drivers in the area may feel the same way, as well as pedestrians and
children playing in the street.

Do not take off your safety belt just
because you are driving in your suburb, or just popping to the corner shop. Do
not think that you know the streets are quiet at this time of the day and
neglect to check your mirrors.

Even with car insurance to help
you out, an accident is never a good thing and will most probably mean a rise
in premiums and you could also lose your no claims discount. And if you decide
to find a cheaper car
insurance option, your accident history could then count against you and
make it harder for you to find a cheaper premium.
